Israel Exists; It Has A Right To Exist In Peace Behind Secure And Defensible Borders; And It Has A Right To Demand Of Its Neighbors That They Recognize Those Facts. I Have Personally Followed And Supported Israel's Heroic Struggle For Survival, Ever Since The Founding Of The State Of Israel 34 Years Ago. In The Pre-1967 Borders Israel Was Barely 10 Miles Wide At Its Narrowest Point. The Bulk Of Israel's Population Lived Within Artillery Range Of Hostile Arab Armies. I Am Not About To Ask Israel To Live That Way Again.

I Think We Should Keep The Grain And Export The Farmers.

It Was Leadership Here At Home That Gave Us Strong American Influence Abroad, And The Collapse Of Imperial Communism. Great Nations Have Responsibilities To Lead, And We Should Always Be Cautious Of Those Who Would Lower Our Profile, Because They Might Just Wind Up Lowering Our Flag.

Government Should Uphold-and Not Undermine-those Institutions Which Are Custodians Of The Very Values Upon Which Civilization Is Founded: Religion, Education And, Above All, Family.

Fellow Americans, Our Duty Is Before Us Tonight. Let Us Go Forward, Determined To Serve Selflessly A Vision Of Man With God, Government For People, And Humanity At Peace. For It Is Now Our Task To Tend And Preserve, Through The Darkest And Coldest Nights, That "sacred Fire Of Liberty" That President Washington Spoke Of Two Centuries Ago, A Fire That Tonight Remains A Beacon To All Oppressed Of The World, Shining Forth From This Kindly, Pleasant, Greening Land We Call America.
