The Death Penalty Fulfills A Preventive Function, But It Is Also Very Clearly A Form Of Revenge. It Is An Especially Severe Form Of Punishment Because It Is So Final. The Human Life Is Ended And The Executed Person Is Deprived Of The Opportunity To Change, To Restore The Harm Done Or Compensate For It.

Some People Automatically Associate Morality And Altruism With A Religious Vision Of The World. But I Believe It Is A Mistake To Think That Morality Is An Attribute Only Of Religion. We Can Imagine Two Types Of Spirituality: One Tied To Religion, While The Other Arises Spontaneously In The Human Heart As An Expression Of Love For Our Neighbors And A Desire To Do Them Good.

I Find That Because Of Modern Technological Evolution And Our Global Economy, And As A Result Of The Great Increase In Population, Our World Has Greatly Changed: It Has Become Much Smaller. However, Our Perceptions Have Not Evolved At The Same Pace; We Continue To Cling To Old National Demarcations And The Old Feelings Of 'us' And 'them'.
